Tomorrow is my 39th birthday
I only want
A cake
And a gift.
The kind you wrap in paper and put a bow on top.
Like a little girl.
the kind of Duncan Hines cake that is yellow for no reason.
With chocolate icing.
I don't know if it is my favorite cake, but it is the kind my dad likes
And I always wanted to be like he was
He knew how to catch fireflies
And identify poison ivy
And roller skate
And bury our dogs in the yard when they were hit by cars
I wanted to grow up to be strong
Like that.
Strong enough to say what I wanted.
